Anatomical or General Pathologist (Permanent Part-time)
Alberta Precision Laboratories (APL) has a permanent part-time (0.50 FTE) position available for a General or Anatomical Pathologist at the Medicine Hat Regional Hospital, starting immediately. The successful candidate will join a team of 4 laboratory physicians working mostly at an acute care institution. The duties include anatomical pathology or general pathology including consultation in blood bank, hematology, clinical chemistry, medical microbiology, accession and/or point of care services and the provision of 1:5 on call coverage; cytopathology, intradepartmental and interdepartmental consultations, frozen section, supervision of one of the rural lab areas and proficiency test assessments. Approximately 11,450 surgical specimens, 2073 non-gynecologic cytology specimens and 40 bone marrow biopsy specimens are processed annually.
APL is a multi-site, province-wide laboratory providing comprehensive laboratory services. APL (South Sector) processes 30+ million tests, 260,000 surgical specimens, 200,000 gynecologic cytology specimens, and 10,000 non-gynecologic cytology specimens annually. The successful candidate must have the ability to work in a setting with a similar case complexity. APL is a publically funded wholly owned subsidiary corporation of Alberta Health Services (AHS), and is party to an affiliation agreement with the University of Calgary (UofC). The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine and APL offer residency-training programs in Anatomic Pathology, General Pathology, Neuropathology and Medical Microbiology, as well as Fellowship training in subspecialty areas within Anatomic Pathology, Hematopathology and Clinical Biochemistry.
The permanent part-time position takes direction from, and reports to the Regional Laboratory Medicine Site Chief, at Medicine Hat Regional Hospital, who in turn reports to the South Sector Medical Director (APL) in Calgary.
The General Pathologist must maintain the highest possible standards of practice including prompt delivery of services to match established key performance indicators and provincial metrics. Responsibilities will include active participation in quality assurance and quality improvement programs, teaching when required, supervising technical staff, on call requirements, clinical consultation with physicians, surgeons and oncologists, and liaising with various multidisciplinary committees and groups that develop and monitor laboratory policies, processes and procedures.
Qualifications include a MD, eligibility for licensure in the Province of Alberta, and certification in General Pathology by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada or Anatomical Pathology/Clinical Pathology by the American Board of Pathology. A proven track record of collegiality and collaborative practice. The ability to multi-task and work in a face-paced hospital laboratory environment is a must. Physicians must also have current Canadian Medical Protective Association coverage.
