The University of Alberta, Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry, Department of Surgery, Division of Cardiac Surgery, in partnership with Alberta Health Services invites applications for an Adult Cardiac Surgeon to be based at the Mazankowski Alberta Heart Institute (MAHI). Located in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, the University of Alberta Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry has been internationally recognized as among the world&rsquo#CD#s top 50 medical schools and as one of Canada&rsquo#CD#s premier health-education institutions.

The University of Alberta, Division of Cardiac Surgery is comprised of a team of approximately 7 FTE adult cardiac surgeons performing the full range of operations for over 1350 adult open heart procedures annually. It provides cardiac surgery care to children and adults from Northern Alberta and across Western Canada. Over 1770 open cases were performed in 2012 including heart, lung, and heart-lung transplants, temporary and long term mechanical assist device implants and major thoracic aortic procedures. There is an active TAVI (Transcatheter Aortic-Valve Implantation) program and a hybrid operating room is slated to open in summer 2013. The MAHI is physically connected to the University of Alberta, Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry and has access to outstanding facilities for basic science research.

The ideal candidate will have the opportunity to join the recently created cardiac surgery basic science research laboratory,(located in the Li Ka Shing Centre for Health Research Innovation on the University of Alberta Campus), which focuses on exvivo thoracic organ perfusion, myocardial hypertrophy and right ventricular failure. Appointment at the University of Alberta will be at the level of Associate Professor or commensurate with credentials. Remuneration will be based on the Fee-for-Service (FFS) schedule.

The successful candidate will be an established cardiac surgeon eligible for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta (CPSA) and possess a minimum of two to five years experience in independent practice. Additionally, a record of outstanding clinical results in complex and high risk patients and advanced training and experience in some facet of advanced cardiac surgery such as minimally invasive valve surgery, surgery for heart failure, pulmonary thromboendarterectomy, complex reoperative surgery, etc. is required. S/he will be expected to have advanced training and qualifications (MSC or PhD) in research methodology and a record of success in basic science or clinical research as demonstrated by publications in high impact journals, at obtaining grant funding, and supervising graduate students.
