Fellowships

The University of Calgary and the University of Alberta in Edmonton offer a variety of clinical and research fellowships programs. Fellowships are available for those who have completed Canadian certification as well as for physicians who trained outside of Canada. The Universities post-graduate medical education (PGME) offices approve fellowships independent of the healthcare organizations in Alberta.

Residents

If you are currently in a residency program outside of Alberta, you can inquire about elective opportunities available at the University of Calgary or University of Alberta.

Observerships / Job Shadows

Observerships and job shadows provide non-clinical learning opportunities for trainees and prospective trainees to observe clinical practice. Observers are not permitted to have direct patient contact, engage in clinical decision-making, or have hands-on training. Observerships are initially arranged by contacting the AHS job shadow team.

Albertan's Studying Abroad for Medical School

As of Spring 2025, Albertan’s studying abroad can now apply directly for an Alberta residency position to begin immediately after graduation.

The Alberta International Medical Graduate (IMG) Stream now permits Canadian citizens and permanent residents who are Alberta high school graduates OR Alberta post-secondary graduates OR have lived in Alberta for 24 weeks prior to application—and are in or attended a medical school outside of Canada—to secure a residency placement in Alberta immediately following graduation.

This new pathway means Albertan’s can return home to begin practicing medicine sooner and serve the communities you know best. The changes made in 2025 include removal of externship and the requirement to have an MD conferred by the December before applying. These changes will commence for the graduating class of 2026.

Applications for these dedicated residency spots are open now through the Alberta International Medical Graduate (AIMG) Program. Students must be in their final year of medical school and planning to graduate in the upcoming year.
