The Division of Neurosurgery, Department of Surgery, Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry at the University of Alberta (Edmonton, Alberta), is accepting applications for the position of Complex Spinal Neurosurgeon.

 

The Neurosurgery Division at the University of Alberta is committed to the improvement of health through excellence in patient care, leadership in education and research, and in preventative initiatives directed at the promotion of neurological well-being. The Division of Neurosurgery provides comprehensive neurosurgical services for a wide geographic area serving a population of well over two million people. Within the division, every neurosurgical subspecialty is represented with growing volumes across the disciplines. The University of Alberta Hospital is a state-of-the-art neurosurgical center with 2-3 neurosurgical operating rooms daily, an integrated pediatric hospital and operating room, intraoperative MRI, neurosurgery led gamma knife facility, an intraoperative CT scanner at each site for navigated spine cases and a soon to open Brain center housing an advanced neurologic intensive care and observation unit.

 

Complex spinal surgery is performed at both the University of Alberta Hospital and the Royal Alexandra Hospital with the successful candidate having a clinical footprint at each site.  Additionally, there may be an expectation to perform routine spinal surgery at other sites in the city. Emphasis will be placed on candidates with demonstrated excellence in both operative and non-operative clinical care.

The successful candidate will be expected to hold a Clinical Academic Colleague appointment  in the Division of Neurosurgery, Department of Surgery, University of Alberta. The position includes a 70% commitment to clinical practice including participation in a general neurosurgery, complex spine on-call program, and non-classroom clinical teaching. A 30% commitment to classroom teaching, research and administration is also required.  The spine program is a combined neurosurgery and orthopedic surgery program and participates in several registries and clinical trials. Involvement with a leadership role in the Royal Alexandra Spine Assessment clinic that investigates and conducts innovative ways to provide timely spine care is also required. Interest in clinical research in terms of the Canadian Spine Outcomes Research Network and clinical trial recruitment is required.  Interest in basic science research and quality improvement initiatives are also welcomed. 

Applicants must hold an MD or equivalent, with completed training in Neurosurgery, and must be eligible for licensure in the Province of Alberta. The successful candidate must have obtained the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada Fellowship in Neurosurgery.  The candidate should have completed a fellowship in complex spine surgery. Preference will be given to applicants who hold a Masters’ Degree or PhD designation.  This position will be at the rank of Assistant Professor and includes a comprehensive benefits program and competitive salary through the Alberta Academic Medicine and Health Services Program (AMHSP).
