Palliative Care Consultant
Acute Care: Provide bedside or virtual palliative care patient consultations on all adult units, ICU and ER within the Red Deer Regional Hospital (RDRH) Centre as requested by other physicians, Monday-Friday, 08:00- 17:00 hours. Provide Palliative Care telephone advice to other physicians, nurse practitioners, nurses caring for patients in other Central Zone hospitals. Attend RDRH Unit 32 Palliative inter-disciplinary Team Rounds at least twice a week. Complete bedside rounds and provide Palliative Care advice on all patients on Unit 32 Palliative (up to 11 beds) and any patients with pain and symptom issues on Unit 32 (Oncology- up to 18 beds), Monday-Friday. Night and weekend call for 24/7 phone advice for Central Zone x 7 days every 6 weeks (in rotation with 5 other Central Zone MDs). May have intermittent support for hospital consult service approximately 1/2-1 day per week from Nurse Practitioner associated with Zone Palliative Care team.
Cancer Clinic: Provide in-person or virtual consultations in rotation with other Palliative Care Clinicians at the Complex Pain and Symptom Clinic at the Central Alberta Cancer Clinic. This would require attendance for one morning about 7 times per year.Home Care/Community: Provide Palliative Care advice to Palliative Care Resource Nurses and Primary Care Physicians throughout Central Zone during weekday office hours and on evenings and weekends during weeks on call. Attend Red Deer Hospice weekly inter-disciplinary Team Rounds (virtual or in-person) at least twice a month. Provide palliative care advice on call services to Central and North Zone physicians together with other physicians on the zone palliative care team. This includes written palliative care advice in response to E-Referral requests sent during weeks on call for the team.
Home Care/Community: Provide Palliative Care advice to Palliative Care Resource Nurses and Primary Care Physicians throughout Central Zone during weekday office hours and on evenings and weekends during weeks on call. Option to attend Red Deer Hospice weekly inter-disciplinary Team Rounds (virtual or in-person). Provide palliative care advice on call services to Central and North Zone physicians together with other physicians on the zone palliative care team. This includes written palliative care advice in response to E-Referral requests sent during weeks on call for the team.
Education: Act as Preceptor to Family Medicine Residents doing mandatory Palliative Care rotations throughout the academic year. Opportunity to teach Medical Students who wish to do Palliative Care electives.
Required Qualifications
- Either Certificate of the College of Family Physicians (CCFP) or at least 2 years of clinical experience in primary Palliative Care
- Pallium Canada LEAP Core Course

- Fellowship in Palliative Care or Enhanced Skills (R3) Year of training in Palliative Care
- Enhanced Skills in Palliative Care R3 Family Medicine Residency
- Pallium Canada LEAP Facilitator Training
- Other Palliative Care Courses (e.g. Victoria Hospice, National/International PC Conferences)
