Responsibilities/Duties:

Alberta Health Services (AHS), Edmonton Zone invites applications for the role of Deputy Zone Clinical Department Head (DZCDH), Continuing Care and Seniors Health, Department of Family Medicine.

This 0.50 FTE position governed by the Medical Staff Bylaws and Rules, reports to the Zone Clinical Department Head, Family Medicine. The Deputy Zone Clinical Department Head, Continuing Care and Seniors Health, will provide overall leadership for Continuing Care and Seniors Health in Edmonton Zone; contributing expert guidance and advice on Zone strategic, planning, and policy matters; and providing leadership to special projects and programmatic development at the request of the Zone Clinical Department Head, Family Medicine.

The Deputy Zone Clinical Department Head Continuing Care and Seniors Health works very closely with the Executive Director Continuing Care within a dyad relationship. Together, this dynamic and collaborative portfolio provides strategic leadership, innovative thinking, planning cycles, and quality improvement activities within the Edmonton Zone. It is also integral for physician recruitment and coordination in the delivery of high quality health care to Continuing Care and Seniors Health Zone-wide.

The current position oversees the key areas of: home living, transition services, supportive living, facility living, palliative care and education. Future plans may incorporate areas of geriatrics – both medicine and mental health – into the leadership portfolio.

The role supports the spectrum of internal stakeholders, other clinical departments (Mental Health, Cancer Care, Medicine), partner agencies (Capital Care), external entities ( non-AHS LTC providers), and Academia (University of Alberta Departments of Family Medicine and Medicine). It serves as a connection to community-based physicians, providing seniors care both in community and in institutional settings. Given the population of the Edmonton area, this age group is expected to increase in the upcoming decades, making this leadership role vitally important.

The position has an expected start date As Soon As Possible and an expected term of 3 years.

The ideal candidate will have superior interpersonal skills and demonstrated abilities in communication, conflict resolution, and a passion for quality and patient safety. They will be an inclusive and visionary leader with significant experience in medical leadership and considered to be a strong clinician by peers. The successful candidate will also be committed to fulfilling clinical and non-clinical duties as a representative of the Department of Family Medicine.

Candidates must be certified by the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC) or the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (FRCPC), be eligible to work in Canada, and hold or be eligible for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta and appointment to the AHS Medical Staff. Candidates should have evidence of formal administrative education or leadership training.
