Surgical Hospitalist - Inpatient Services , 22-RAH-FAM-CA-42
Alberta Health Services is currently recruiting ten (10) full time (1.0 FTE) independently licensed family physicians for the Surgical Hospitalist Program at the Royal Alexandra Hospital to provide services for the Orthopedic Surgery Centre and Thoracic Surgery service. Locum availability may also be considered through this posting.
The program is interested in hiring Family Physicians with a key focus on meeting the medical needs of surgical inpatients and serving as a 12-month pilot for remuneration through a new Alternative Relationship Plan approved by Alberta Health. Surgical hospitalists will manage the medical/surgical needs of admitted surgical patients working in collaboration with an attending surgeon for the patient.
Primary clinical activities are focused on the medical needs of surgical patients with surgical management provided by the Surgeons. Daily responsibilities will include, but not be limited to, completing admissions, medication reconciliation, and allergy profiles, providing daily assessments, ordering tests, diagnostics, investigations, procedures, and consultations in collaboration with the Surgeons. Timely follow up on diagnostic tests during the day will be critical in ensuring efficient flow of patients through the program and allow for timely booking of further investigations/procedures. Duties also include participation in discharge planning and dictating discharge summaries as required, as well as liaising with the interdisciplinary team, patients, and families.
Ideal candidates will be available to be on service for a minimum of one 3-day block of day, evening and night shifts per month (total 9 shifts/month). Coverage of weekends and holidays will be shared among team members. The expectation is that the hospitalist will be available for admissions/consultations and ward work for the duration of their shift and remain onsite for scheduled hours.
Physicians must be eligible for independent licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta, have appropriate Canadian Medical Protective Association (CMPA) coverage, and current ACLS certification. Applicants must have current experience in the clinical management of acute care inpatients, and/or experience in emergency room services.
Interested applicants should apply online and include their curriculum vitae with three references, current CPSA permit and a letter of application.
